In the recent past, Ethiopia was made up of 10 states. Now there are 11 of them and the newest is known as South West Ethiopia’s Regional State. The new state Council held their first of a series of regular meetings. The meeting was held in Bonga City.
Wondimu Kurta is the Speaker of the new Council. South West State was created through a referendum in which a majority were in favour of the formation of a new state. The new state is made up of Sheka, Bench Sheko, Kaffa, West Omo and Dawuro zones and Konta Special District.
The Ethiopian National Electoral Board (NEBE) announced the results of the referendum in October 2021. The Southern Nations, Nationalities and People’s Region Council handed over power to South West Ethiopia’s State on 1st November, 2021.
Among many decisions, the Council is expected to enact the budget plan for fiscal year 2021-22 for the state, the Supreme Court and the Audit Bureau of the regional state.
