Former US Secretary of State Colin Powell has died of Covid-19 complications. This is according to an announcement by his family.
“General Colin L. Powell, former U.S. Secretary of State and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, passed away this morning due to complications from Covid 19,” the Powell family wrote on Facebook on Monday afternoon, October 18.
“We have lost a remarkable and loving husband, father, grandfather and a great American,” they said, noting he was fully vaccinated.
“We want to thank the medical staff… for their caring treatment,” the statement read in part.
Colin Powell was a leading military officer who served as the first African-American Secretary of State in 2001 under the presidency of George W. Bush. Previously, he served in the US-Vietnam war.
Later on he became a trusted military adviser to leading American politicians. He was very popular across America however, his popularity grew dim due to his push for the Iraq war. They claimed that Iraq was developing weapons of mass destruction. This allegation was later proved to be untrue.
