The Chadian army spokesman has announced that President Idriss Deby died at the front-line.
He died from injuries sustained from attacks at the front-line. The rebels, launched their attacks from Libya.
A succession race has started in Chad. He had been a crucial partner in the fight against Boko Haram and other armed groups.
Idriss Deby was one the longest ruling African leaders since December 1990. He was in power for 30 years.
He won elections in 1996, 2001, 2011, 2016 and lastly in 2021. He had won the recent elections and was poised to lead Chad for another 5 years.
Chad under Idriss Deby was integral in the fight against Boko Haram who have in the past attached several places in Chad included in the capital Ndjamena.
