Tigray state is the home of Aksum- the land of Ancient Ethiopian civilization and headquarters of Tigray People’s Liberation Front.
The state is also known for the famous Battle of Adwa which was a symbol of Ethiopian military supremacy over the Italians.
Meles Zenawi was a TPLF leader. Tigray People’s Liberation Front was founded in 1975 by University students of Tigray origin.
In 1991, TPLF emerged victorious in their war with Ethiopia. Tigray People’s Liberation Front established its own businesses and resources seemed to flow towards Tigray but the group’s leaders were the actual final beneficiaries.
Recently, Tigray People’s Liberation Front fired rockets/missiles into Gondar, Bahir Dar (cities in Ethiopia) and Asmara (Eritrea).
Tigray People’s Liberation Front has built the largest militia and special forces in Ethiopia with an excess of 250,000 people.
Tigray People’s Liberation Front consider Prime Minister Dr. Abiy Ahmed to be an illegitimate leader consider that he postponed the August elections due to Covid-19 pandemic outbreak.
Ethiopian federal government has military bases in Tigray because starting 1998, Ethiopia and Eritrea engaged in a deadly war. These military installations were attacked by TPLF in what they termed as “anticipatory defense”.
Tigray People’s Liberation Front has in recent times threatened to engage in guerilla tactics if they are defeated in the current conflict.
TPLF has been accused of various wrongs such as violating the federal constitution of Ethiopia by setting up its own electoral commission and holding elections. Further, Tigray People’s Liberation Front is accused of refusing to hand over the former Chief Intelligence Officer, one Getachew Assefa, who allegedly was responsible for human rights violations.
