Uganda’s president Yoweri Kaguta Museveni on Sunday said schools and institutions of higher learning will reopen for candidate classes and final year students.
“We think that it is safe because finalists in each learning institution are a much smaller number compared to the total enrollment,” said President Museveni in a televised address.
Uganda has 1.2 Million students in candidate classes.
The 1.2 Million candidates and students in final year students in colleges and universities will get back to class on October 15.
The finalists account for 10 percent of the total student population.
According to President Museveni, social distancing can be achieved because the finalists account for 10 percent of the total student population.
“Therefore, each group of finalists will have bigger space for social-distancing — whether they are in day schools or boarding schools,” he said.
Learning institutions in the East African country were closed in March to curb the spread of the deadly coronavirus.
Mr Museveni earlier ordered a taskforce on coronavirus to review the possibility of reopening learning institutions gradually.
Uganda has recorded 6,287 coronavirus cases with the virus claiming 63 lives.
Uganda has also reopened its airports for tourists.
