More than 200 inmates have escaped from a jail in Moroto, North-East Uganda.
The prison facility is on the foothills of Mount Moroto.
The prisoners killed a soldier before escaping from the facility on Wednesday afternoon.
They made away with 15 guns.
Johnson Byabashaija, the Commissioner General Uganda Prisons, confirmed the development.
‘’There has been a break out from the prison after inmates overpowering staff and accessing the armory where there were about 15 riffles. They are on the loose now. Heavy exchange of fire ensured. They have run towards Mt Moroto,’’ Mr Byabashaija said on Wednesday.
The inmates took off their yellow prison uniforms and ran into the hills naked to avoid being detected.
Activities in Moroto were brought to a standstill by the incident as a joint force of police, army and prison wardens went after the escapees.
The escapees are said to be ‘’hardcore’’ criminals.
