Alexander Lukashenko has been the president of Belarus for 26 years and has no intention to step down despite the ongoing protests in Minsk, the capital of Belarus following the elections held on 9th August which many believed was rigged.
Protests have also been reported in Grodno and Brest and 140 protesters have been arrested for far.
The leading opposition candidate Svetlona Tikhanorskaya was reported to have been arrested after the vote and later released and left for Luthuania from where she is calling for protests.
Lukashenko said that he won 80% of the votes while the opposition leader claims that she won between 60-70% of the votes based on the actual votes cast.
