Somalia’s election commission wants parliamentary and presidential elections postponed to August next year.
Halima Ibrahim, the chairperson of the commission says that a number of issues have disrupted the commission’s work.
Lack of funds, Covid-19 pandemic, floods and insecurity are among the issues.
The Presidential election was scheduled for February 2021 while the parliamentary election was set for November this year.
Elections in Somalia have been decided by clan leaders in the past. The country will now hold one-person one vote elections.
However, Somalia’s opposition have rejected the suggestion of delaying the elections.
The Forum for National Parties has rejected the extension of the current government’s term. It has also called on the resignation of the members of the electoral commission.
The parliament is due to stand down on November, while the president’s term ends in February 2021
