Championship side Stoke City have announced that manager Michael O’Neill has tested positive for coronavirus.
The former Republic of Ireland boss returned a positive result in the sixth wave of tests carried out at the Championship clubs as they prepare to resume the season.
The 50-year-old tested negative in the previous five rounds of tests.
O’Neill will have to undergo a period of self-isolation.
Stoke City assistant manager Billy McKinlay will be in charge of the team as it prepares to face Reading on June 20.
Stoke City said in a statement: ‘’He will now follow the relevant guidance and undergo a period of self-isolation, whilst continuing to be in regular virtual contact with his coaching staff and players.’’
O’Neill was appointed the Potters manager in November 2019 with the club at the foot of the Championship table. He turned things around and lifted the team to 17th place.
However, the threat of relegation still remains as Stoke sit three points better than third-bottom Charlton Athletic.
