Borussia Dortmund sporting director Michael Zorc has confirmed that midfielder Mario Gotze will leave the club at the end of the season.
Gotze confirmed in April that he was planning to leave Dortmund to seek a new direction in his career, although club CEO Hans-Watzke later suggested that he could decide to sign a new contract.
Dortmund Head Coach Lucien Favre placed Gotze’s future in doubt this week after he admitted that the player did not suit his preferred system.
Zorc confirmed Gotze will leave the Dortmund ahead of Saturdays Bundesliga clash with Wolfsburg. He will leave on a free transfer.
Gotze will be leaving Dortmund for the second time. He returned to the club in 2016 having left to join Bayern Munich 3 years earlier.
Gotze scored the winning goal for Germany against Argentina in the 2014 FIFA World Cup final. He has however struggled in form and fitness in recent years.
Bundesliga side Hertha Berlin are interested in signing him. Serie A clubs including Milan, Lazio and Roma have also been linked.
