1.0 What is the High-Level Political Forum (HLPF)?
The High-Level Political Forum (HLPF) is a United Nations Platform for follow-up and review of the implementation of Sustainable Development Goals.
2.0 When was High-Level Political Forum formed and why?
The HLPF was established in 2013 through a resolution by adopted by the United Nations General Assembly on 9 July 2013.
The HLPF was established in order to strengthen the Economic and Social Council as a forum for follow up for outcomes of UN conferences and summits on economic, social and environmental fields.
The High-Level Political Forum has a role to play in ensuring that there is effective participation of UN Member States and specialized agencies at all the meetings.
The President of the General Assembly chairs the High-Level Political Forum meetings. The General Assembly in the resolutions decided that the review of states shall be voluntary but they encourage member states to participate in reporting.
In the resolution of the General Assembly, it was resolved that the High-Level Political Forum shall dedicate sufficient time towards discussing challenges facing middle-income countries in achieving sustainable development goals.
While the High-Level Political Forum is an intergovernmental forum, the representatives of all major groups and other relevant stakeholders are allowed to: attend all official meetings of the forum, access all official documents and information, intervene in official meetings, submit documents and present written and oral presentations; make recommendations and organize side events and round tables in cooperation with member states and the Secretariat.
3.0 Who are we likely to meet at the High-Level Political Forum?
The HLPF is attended by philanthropic organizations, academics, persons with disabilities, and other groups active in the area of Sustainable Development Goals.
At the High-Level Political Forum they encourage evidence-based decision making, data collection and analysis in developing countries.
4.0 When will the next meeting take place?
The HLPF 2020 will be held on 7 July – 16 July, 2020. This includes a three-day ministerial meeting of the forum from 14-16 July, 2020.
5.0 What is the theme for High-Level Political Forum 2020?
The theme for 2020 is: “Accelerated action and trans-formative pathways: realizing the decade of action and delivery for sustainable development.”
6.0 How many countries will be reviewed in 2020?
A total of 50 countries (27 first time presenters, 22 second time presenters and 1 third time presenter) will present their national voluntary reviews at the High-Level Political Forum.
