A total of 17 American and Canadian missionaries kidnapped in Haiti over the weekend are being held by a notorious gang known as 400 Mawozo according to Haiti authorities.
Out of the foreigners kidnapped by 400 Mawozo, 16 were Americans and one was a Canadian missionary. The 17 were travelling by motor vehicle on Saturday to Titanyen, norh of Port-au-Prince. This was after paying a visit to an orphanage in the Croix des Bouquets area. Among those kidnapped are five minors.
“Join us in praying for those who are being held hostage, the kidnappers, and the families, friends, and churches of those affected,” Christian Aid Ministries said in the statement.
The gang that is responsible for the abduction is known as 400 Mawozo. This is according to Police Inspector Frantz Champaigne.
There is an ongoing investigation according to Haiti’s security apparatus. Claude Joseph, Haiti’s Foreign Affairs Minister told the CNN that Haitian authorities are in contact with the US State Department about the kidnapping.
The gang has been blamed by Juno7 for kidnapping of five Catholic priests as well as two nuns at the beginning of 2021. All members of the clergy were released.
A team from the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) arrived in Haiti to help the State Department in locating and negotiating for release of the missionaries.
