Allegations have been made that 32 joyriders traveled to USA to attend the 2022 World Athletics Championships in Oregon, USA.

This travel was made at the expense of Kenya’s team including Ferdinand Omanyala who almost missed the tournament.

The joyriders traveled a head of the team of athletes. This was a move to confuse the US embassy as they issued their visas.

“The reason why the ministry officials included Omanyala and Tuwei in the last batch was meant to hoodwink embassy officials since they knew the star sprinter and the federation president could not be left out,” a source told media.

It is further alleged that each of these 32 joyriders bribed with Ksh. 2 million on order to be included in the list.

The 32 joyriders expanded the list from the initial 80 to 112 people.

The State Department of Sports denied the claim that each of the joyriders paid Ksh. 2 million to be included in the list.  They also said that no government official travelled to the USA.

“All athletes were issued with visas within one week save for Omanyala and Sheila Chekirui. Some officials were not issued with visas, including myself, because of the backlog at the embassy. I am not aware of any other list,” Tuwei stated.

Despite the delays, Omanyala arrived in the USA and qualified from the semi-finals where he was third.
