Kenya Prisons Service commissioner Wycliffe Ogallo confirmed on Sunday that 31 prisoners at the Nairobi Remand tested positive for Covid-19.
The 31 cases were part of the 59 samples collected from remandees and prisoners on Thursday in the ongoing mass testing.
The 31 were evacuated by the Nairobi Emergency Response team on Saturday and are now receiving treatment at health facilities across the city.
The Kenya Prisons Service says all the convicts and remandees currently in custody are safe.
The Kenya Prisons Service statement read: “From the results received on Saturday, 31 samples had tested positive for coronavirus after which the Nairobi County Emergency Response Team promptly moved in and evacuated the patients to various treatment centers for case management.’’
Kenya has 129 prison facilities across the country.
Prison visits have been suspended to minimise the spread of coronavirus.
‘’The suspension of all visits to our prison stations, Borstal institutions and youth corrective training centres has also proved effective in mitigating the spread of the virus to the prison population,” said Ogallo
