There are 47,564,296 people in Kenya according to the 2019 population census figures released on Monday. This shows that Kenya’s population has expanded with 9 million in the last 10 years.
Out of the figures, 24,014,716 are female and 23,548,056 are male.
Intersex people are 1524 in number.
The Kenya National Bureau of Statistics director Zachary Mwangi released the figures at State House on Monday.
According to KNBS, the most populated counties are as follows:
1. Nairobi (4.3)
- Kiambu (2.4)
- Nakuru (2.1)
- Kakamega (1.8)
- Bungoma (1.6)
The least populated counties are:
- Lamu (143,920)
- Isiolo (268,002)
- Samburu (310,327)
- Tana River (315,943)
- Taita Taveta (340,671)
15 counties have a population of over 1 Million led by Kakamega at 1.87M, Bungoma at 1.67M, Meru at 1.54M and Kilifi at 1.45M.
Counties in Nothern Kenya have the largest Household size. Mandera County leads with an average household size of 6.9 persons per family.
It is followed by Wajir County at 6.1, Garissa 5.9, Marsabit 5.8 and Turkana County 5.6.
Nairobi City County Household size is the lowest at 2.9. The national average household size is 3.9.
President Uhuru Kenyatta thanked the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics for conducting a successful census exercise. He said that the Census figures will help in realigning development strategies.
Kenya becomes the first country in Africa to release the results two months after the census exercise was completed.
