Kenya’s members of Parliament traveled to watch FIFA world cup in Russia and they are expected to travel back home on Sunday.
A total of 14 Kenyan MPs and 6 Senators are in Russia at the expense of taxpayers. The Ministry of Sports had provided a list of only six MPs from the Sports Labor and Social Welfare Committee who were supposed to travel.
The members of sports Committee who traveled are:
- Victor Munyaka – Machakos Town
- Wafula Wamunyinyi (Kandunyi)
- Sylvanus Maritim (Ainamoi)
- Peter Kalima (Homa Bay Town)
- Jones Mulowla (Voi)
- Bernard Shinali (Ikolomani)
- Charles Ngusya (Mwingi West)
- George Risa (Kajiado West)
Senators were supposed to be lead by Nairobi Senator Johnson Sakaja. However, he had not left Kenya by 11 July 2018.
That notwithstanding, Judy Pareno (nominated), Cleophas Malala (Kakamega) and Aron Cheruiyot (Kericho) are already in Russian capital Moscow.
Kenya’s parliament vehemently defended the trip saying that the members had just gone to benchmark on how to organize and host international tournaments in Kenya.
According to sources from the Star newspaper, an economy air ticket from Kenya to Russia is selling at Ksh. 400,000. This is due to the high demand due to the high traffic to Russia occasioned by FIFA World Cup.
Apart from the air tickets the MPs were also given daily allowances. According to SRC ceilings, the MPs can receive up to Ksh. 86,200 per day for each of them.
In total, this would cost Ksh. 20.6 million.
The President of FKF traveled to Russia to watch the games unlike in 2014 when the entire Harambee Stars (Kenya’s national team) traveled.
