Ousmane Sonko, 48, was jailed for two years for ‘corrupting youth’ and supporting opposition protests in Senegal.
Sonko stated that these are plans to bar him from participating in the upcoming presidential elections in Senegal.
The opposition protesters went to the streets and set motor vehicles on fire following the ruling on Sonko’s case.
Police fired tear gas to disburse the participants in opposition protesters in Senegal.
Sonko ran for presidency in 2019 and emerged third in the race. He is accusing President Macky Sall of planning to cling to power for an illegal 3rd term.
Senegalese government shut down social media and internet in the country in a bid to control the protests.
