“I am grateful to all donors for this vote of confidence. This funding is vital to support refugees, internally displaced and stateless people. The strong commitment also signals solidarity with the communities and countries hosting them,” said Filippo Grandi, UN High Commissioner for Refugees.
UNHCR has plans to work in 136 countries and territories in 2022. The UN agency has a budget of $8.9 billion half of which will be used in responding to emergencies. The agency plans to assist people who have fled their homes in Ethiopia, Myanmar, Afghanistan, Venezuela and elsewhere.
UNHCR’s key activities in 2020 includes child and refugee protection, relief items, emergency preparedness, cash assistance for the most vulnerable, food security, health, response to gender based violence, education, livelihoods, support for stateless people, environmental protection and clean energy among others.
UNHCR estimates that there were 84 million people forcibly displaced at the beginning of 2021. The UN agency believes that this number will increase in 2022.
A large portion of UNHCR funding comes from voluntary contributions such as donor governments. The private sector made an additional $315 million towards UNHCR budget for 2022.
